After receiving an anonymous note about a missing child, Sergeant Howie arrives on the remote Summerisle only to be met with evasive townspeople who claim the child does not exist. Attempting to chase down clues, Howie catches on to the pagan culture that prevails - couples have sex publicly, and children learn about phallic symbols - all things that deeply offend the devoutly Christian Howie. Those acts seem far less severe once a series of photographs brings him to the conclusion that children are being sacrificed for the island's harvest, and he is even more determined to find the missing child whom he believes is up next for the fast approaching May Day festival.
